TAMUG is recognized nationally for academic excellence. The ocean-oriented academic programs are accredited
regionally and professionally. Time Magazine's Princeton Review lists TAMUG among the top 650 colleges
in the U.S. Only 8 other public colleges in Texas are included.
University of Texas Medical Branch at Galveston
UTMB has the most experienced allied health sciences school in the Southwest. For over a century,
the University of Texas Medical Branch has dedicated its efforts toward improving the health of
Texans. Since 1968, the School of Health Professions have helped carry on this tradition with over
6,000 professionals for the nation's healthcare workforce coming from UTMB.
Galveston College
Galveston College provides the citizens of Galveston Island and surrounding region with academic, workforce development,
continuing education, and community service programs. The College serves an ethnically diverse
population in continuing education and workforce development programs. Galveston College has proven
to be a progressive, dynamic institution of higher education known for its partnerships with businesses
and organizations and its commitment to provide a quality learning environment that is student-focused.
Its programs have consistently gained local, state, and national acclaim in areas that include health occupations
programs, workforce development initiatives, NJCAA athletics, innovative fundraising, culinary arts,
and special student services.
Galveston Independent School District
GISD currently serves approximately 5,400 students on the Island and Bolivar Peninsula with one high school,
two middle schools, and four elementary schools. The district offers a variety of programs for
students including dual credit courses with Galveston College, a nationally recognized Advanced
Placement program, bilingual and English as a Second Language curriculum, a two-way immersion
program for elementary students learning English and learning Spanish, special education programs,
an Accelerated Instruction Model (AIM) program, preschool program for children with disabilities,
student assistance program, and tech prep initiatives with Galveston College.
GISD offers Texas Education Agency "Recognized" campuses, Advanced Placement (AP) exams for college
credit, Advancement Via Individual Determination (AVID) programs to prepare freshman students for college,
sound production classes, and a Newcomer Program for students new to the U.S.
GISD's student body is ethnically and culturally diverse. Approximately 41 percent is Hispanic, 31 percent is African
American, and 28 percent is white or of other races. Ball High School students have been accepted to Harvard, Princeton,
Georgetown, MIT, U.S. Naval Academy, West Point, Rice, Stanford, UCLA, U.S. Air Force Academy, William and Mary,
Wharton School of Business, Tulane, Trinity, Northwestern, Washington and Lee, Baylor, SMU, Texas A&M University, University of Texas,
University of Houston and many other state and national universities and colleges.
