The following task force committees are comprised of GEDP members, who conduct monthly meetings to accomplish the various goals and objectives chosen specifically for each of Galveston's major industries, with the collective goal of enhancing business opportunities and increasing the tax and employment bases in Galveston.
The Education, Healthcare and Emerging Technology Task Force works to enhance the educational opportunities across Galveston Island and continues to seek new investment opportunities for healthcare and emerging technology companies. In addition to supporting the creation of a dedicated Technology Incubator for Galveston, this initiative creates a networking environment for emerging technology companies.
The Maritime Task Force continues seeking new avenues for publicizing the economic importance of our industrial partners on Galveston Island. This year the Task Force is set to conduct a Maritime Impact Assessment with those businesses located on the Island that are involved in the Maritime/Support Service Industry for Offshore Oil and Gas. This Task Force continues exploring opportunities for expansion, diversification and new locations for companies seeking to take advantage of the opportunities presented in Galveston.
The Tourism & Hospitality Task Force works to address issues and seek opportunities as it relates to the Tourism industry. Tourism brings over 6 million visitors per year to Galveston and generates a substantial tax base for Galveston and the region through sales taxes and the collection of hotel occupancy taxes.
The GIS Task Force operates through a consortium of various entities. The GEDP continues an active GIS program for use by parties interested in geographic information pertaining to the infrastructure and economic climate of Galveston. Partners to this initiative include City of Galveston, Galveston County Central Appraisal District, Texas A&M University at Galveston, Galveston County, ESRI, HGAC, Galveston Historical Foundation, Texas Gas, CenterPoint Energy, and others.
This Task Force has initiated the task of incorporating lessons learned during Hurricane Ike into the ongoing planning efforts of the GEDP for continuity planning for catastrophic events. Issues identified for priority handling include reentry procedures, permitting and assessments, and the utilization of local businesses in the recovery and reconstruction of Galveston.
